Ben Whittaker vs Braian Suarez – Big Fight Preview & Predictions

Ben Whittaker is back in action this weekend as he takes on Argentina’s Braian Suarez.

Suarez is Whittaker’s second opponent in the last 12 months in what has been a pretty slow period.

‘The Surgeon’ signed for Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing in the closing stages of the year as he switched from Ben Shalom & Boxxer, who promoted him from his professional debut.

The 28-year-old was a standout amateur, picking up silver at the Olympic Games at the 2020 tournament.

He caught the attention of boxing fans from the off with his flashy, eye-catching style.

Whittaker’s first real test came in his Riyadh Season debut when he fought Liam Cameron on the undercard of Dmitry Bivol & Artur Beterbiev’s first clash.

He started to face some adversity in what was his first major step-up in opposition before being hurled over the ropes in the sixth round, with the bout being called a draw following injuries ‘The Surgeon’ sustained.

Cameron & Whittaker (10-0-1, 7 KOs) would rematch six months later and the Team GB standout made no mistake, stopping his man in the second round.

The 28-year-old dispatched of his last opponent in similar fashion, stopping Benjamin Gavazi in the first round to claim the WBC Silver light heavyweight title.

He takes on the experienced Suarez (21-4, 20 KOs) on Saturday, who will hope to push Whittaker into deep waters.

Of his 21 wins, the Argentine has stopped 20 of his opponents, proving he is a live threat on Saturday.

He comes off a second round stoppage win over Sergio Dantas in November, who he put down twice before forcing the referee to end the bout.

Suarez may be a recognisable name to some British boxing fans following his fight with Lyndon Arthur in 2023. The Argentine was stopped in the 10th, but caused ‘King Arthur’ problems, dropping him in the fourth round.

Prediction: Whittaker’s pedigree should prove to be too much for Suarez and he should get his man out early before eyeing a US debut.

Molly McCann vs Ashleigh Johnson

Standout UFC star-turned professional boxer, Molly McCann (3-0, 1 KO) returns to the ring in her home city of Liverpool.

Since switching from the octagon to the squared circle, the Liverpudlian has won all three of her fights to date, with a stoppage on her debut.

‘Meatball’ takes on Ashleigh Johnson in what is her first scheduled eight-rounder to date.

Johnson (3-3) is also relatively inexperienced, with just six bouts to her name.

Prediction: McCann’s extensive combat sports background should carry her through to a points win.

Remaining Undercard

Peter McGrail (12-2, 6 KOs) returns after his loss to Shabaz Massoud as he takes on Ckari Cani Mansilla (18-4, 13 KOs) for the vacant WBO Intercontinental super bantamweight title. He should have enough to get back to winning ways.

Joe McGrail (12-0, 5 KOs) should rip away the Central Area super bantamweight crown from Aaron Hayden (10-0, 2 KOs) on points.

Unbeaten heavyweight prospect, Leo Atang (5-0, 5 KOs) should have enough to stop Viktar Chvarkou (6-32, 3 KOs), but will likely get some needed rounds.

Stephen Clarke should stop Morales, while Tom Rafferty should score a decisive win at middleweight.

Both Jack Power (7-0, 1 KO) and Sam Norris (2-0) should win their respective fights on Saturday.
