Britt Baker’s status in AEW remains unclear, and another update that paints a picture of very little movement surrounding the former women’s champion behind the scenes.
During a recent Fightful Select Q&A, Sean Ross Sapp addressed questions about Baker’s future with AEW, possible return plans, and whether she had been considered for Willow Nightingale’s “Comeback Killer” storyline. When asked if Baker was ever intended to be the payoff to Willow’s angle, Sapp said he never heard of a definitive creative plan involving her return, although her name had at least been discussed internally.
“I never heard of an end game or a specific return that was supposed to beat her, but now whenever she’s back, someone can kind of turn the tables on her. I had heard some other names mentioned. I heard Britt discussed. I don’t know, like, if it ever even made it to her or anything.”
Sapp quickly clarified that Baker being mentioned should not be viewed as confirmation of any actual storyline plans.
“Obviously it’s a name that gets brought up. Again, that’s not aggregatable. It’s just naturally anybody who’s off TV, their name gets brought up.”
The biggest update came when Sapp was directly asked whether he still believed Baker may not be returning to AEW anytime soon. According to him, the situation stands out largely because he has heard almost nothing regarding her creatively.
“Nothing really. It’s more the absence of just anything. I haven’t heard of any, like, substantial interaction. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.”
Sapp also discussed Baker’s AEW contract situation and explained that her original five-year deal signed in 2021 would normally expire in fall 2026. However, he noted that injury-related time away from the ring could potentially extend that agreement.
“She signed a five-year contract in 2021 that would carry her into the fall of this year. Every time I talk about this, it gets aggregated as fact, which is very stupid. So don’t aggregate this. But I am not personally sure if there is any injury time that can be added. She’s missed time with injury, so it’s possible, and I do think that AEW would extend it if they could.”
Sapp then openly questioned why AEW has barely used Baker in recent years despite her past popularity within the company.
“I haven’t heard of anything regarding her or that, or just much of anything, and I think that’s a bummer, man. Like, listen, she had a bad match with Mercedes, she did her spot with Serena and it just wasn’t— it didn’t come off well. But, like, to me, having someone like Britt Baker, who has been super over, wrestle five times in two and a half years is a giant waste of money.”
Baker previously fueled even more discussion earlier this year when a fan questioned why AEW had not brought her back during Revolution despite featuring several returns and debuts throughout the show. Baker responded with a short reply that immediately drew attention online.
“Not up to me.”
At this point, Sapp’s latest comments suggest there still may not be much creative movement regarding Baker’s AEW future, despite her remaining under contract with the company.
