Ahead of the match against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Lucknow Super Giants were at the bottom-most position of the IPL 2026 points table. With 7 defeats in 9 games, they were already on the verge of elimination, while RCB was looking to claim the number two spot on the ladder by defeating LSG at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium on Thursday, May 7.
The 111-run knock by Mitchell Marsh changed the whole complexion of the LSG vs RCB match. The wicket was not ideal for the batters, but Marsh made it look simple. In the second innings, when RCB went to bat, Mohammed Shami and Prince Yadav plucked the wickets of Jacob Bethell and Virat Kohli in the first and second over, respectively.
LSG outplayed RCB in a rain-affected match in Lucknow
With two back-to-back wickets, RCB instantly went on the back foot while they were chasing a target of 210 runs in 19 overs. Because of the rain, the 20-over match is reduced to 19 overs. RCB fought well until the last over, but they fell short by only 6 runs.
Ideally, 16 points are considered enough to secure a place in the play-offs with a good net run rate. If multiple teams have the same number of points, then the net run rate will come into the equation. Ahead of the RCB match, LSG had only 4 points. With the win against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, they are currently with 6 points and four more matches to go in their remaining group fixtures.

Can LSG able to qaulify in the play-offs?
LSG will have to play a couple of matches against the Chennai Super Kings, and one each against the Rajasthan Royals and the Punjab Kings. If LSG is able to win all of their remaining games, then they will have 8 more points in their bag, and 14 in total. Still, they will be short by the 16-point mark. Additionally, Lucknow Super Giants will have to take care of their net run rate also.
They will have to keep their eyes on the other teams’ matches as well. Mathematically, there might be a fraction of a chance for LSG’s qualification in the play-offs, but in reality, it looked like near impossible. The other teams near the fourth position of the table, like the Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals, and even the Chennai Super Kings, are also in the race.
Lucknow Super Giants finally wins at home
Lucknow Super Giants defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 9 runs via the DLS method in a rain-affected thriller, one of their few bright moments this season. However, the win came after six consecutive losses in the tournament.
Rishabh Pant’s side will be relieved after winning their first home game after 8 losses at this venue. They will be facing the Chennai Super Kings in the next game, which is a key clash for both sides, keeping in mind the top 4 finish.
