In today’s (May 12) Canadian Rumours roundup, I’m looking at three storylines that are making summer news across Canada. First, the Canucks hometown legends may be sliding into advisory roles. Second, a Maple Leafs review suggests that the team will keep Craig Berube around while John Chayka courts Auston Matthews. The Oilers are staring down a deadline with McDavid’s contract ticking.
Canucks Rumour: Are the Sedins Returning?
Vancouver is reportedly in talks with franchise icons Daniel and Henrik Sedin about stepping into larger advisory roles. Both are already woven into the team fabric, so this sounds less like a shake-up and more like formalizing the influence they’ve quietly had for years.
Think mentorship for younger players, input on culture and identity, maybe a seat at the table for scouting or hockey operations chats. If it happens, the transition should be smooth, and they’d instantly carry clout inside the room. That could nudge roster and development choices toward the club’s old-school values while still letting management steer the hard decisions.
Maple Leafs Rumour: Will Berube Stay as Coach?
Craig Berube’s name keeps coming up as the guy expected to return behind the bench after a recent organizational audit. Management apparently liked what they saw in the review and wants continuity, so the rumour is that Berube’s sticking around.
Meanwhile, new GM John Chayka is lining up a sit-down with Auston Matthews to lay out the long-term plan and try to lock him in beyond his current deal. That meeting is huge. Matthews is the franchise centrepiece. You can bet Chayka will be selling stability, a clear timeline for becoming a contender, and maybe some roster promises. If Matthews is convinced, Maple Leafs fans breathe easy. If not, expect the panic meter to spike.
Oilers Rumour: Is Edmonton in a Mess with McDavid?
Edmonton’s in full panic mode if McDavid doesn’t get some help. His deal’s winding down, and fans are upset. Bowman and the front office have to show they can actually build a Cup team, and fast.
If they can’t demonstrate a clear path to the Stanley Cup Finals soon, the organization could face a brutal choice. They either double down on moves to win now (and risk salary cap chaos) or start planning for life after McDavid to avoid losing him for nothing. Neither option is pretty.
