Cincinnati Reds vs Chicago Cubs – May 6, 2026

Last night the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds in the bottom of the 9th inning on a walk-off hit. That has guaranteed the home team a split of the 4-game series. The Reds will look to try and salvage something from it tonight as the two teams get back on the field for another night game at Wrigley. First pitch is scheduled for 7:40pm ET.

Starting Lineups

Starting Pitchers

Brady Singer

It’s been an inconsistent season for Singer through his first seven starts of the year. After giving up 10 hits and five earned runs in 2.2 innings in Miami on April 8th, he came back with two quality starts and a 2-run, 5.1 inning outing to complete the month. But then he faced Pittsburgh on May 1st and gave up four runs and only record one out in the 4th inning before exiting the game.

The splits this season for Singer don’t tell a good story. Both groups of hitters are finding a lot of success, but are getting there a bit differently. Lefties are hitting .366 against him, but they aren’t walking much and are hitting for good power when they do get hits. Right-handed hitters are hitting for a strong average, though nothing like lefties. They are also walking as often as they strike out and are making a ton of contact. Righties are also hitting for a lot more power when they get hits.

Colin Rea

The season had been going fairly well for Rea through his first five outings of the year. He picked up a 3-inning save in his first appearance back in March. After a 3.1 inning outing to start April he then got stretched out, throwing 5.0, 6.0, and 6.2 innings in his next three games (two starts, one relief appearance). And then he ran into the Dodgers, who put up six runs in 3.1 innings against him to end April. The last time out he rebounded by giving up two runs in 5.1 innings to Arizona.

The platoon splits this season have been big for Rea. He’s dominated right-handed hitters, holding them to a .188 average with a few walks and just one extra-base hit. Teams have been sending plenty of lefties to the plate against him and they have found a lot of success. Left-handed hitters have hit .305 against him and are showing a little more power, though it’s not much power at all.

News and Notes

Roster moves and roster moves

The Reds made a bunch of moves today. Joining the Reds are relievers Tejay Antone (from Triple-A) and Pierce Johnson (back from the bereavement list). Leaving the Reds are Emilio Pagan (15-day injured list) and Chase Petty (optioned to Triple-A). Brandon Williamson was also moved from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list. We have a few more details on the moves and a whole lot of details about Tejay Antone from our piece written earlier today when the moves were announced.

Getting on with JJ Bleday

This season JJ Bleday has played in 32 games between his time in Triple-A and with the Reds. He’s been on base in 30 of those games. He failed to reach base safely in the 1st game of the season, and then again in his 28th game of the season.
