After a tough loss Monday night in which the bullpen gave up another late-inning lead, Chase Burns tries to even the series at one game apiece with the Phillies and once again snap a Reds’ losing streak.

Starting Pitchers
Chase Burns
In each of his last two outings, Burns has snapped a Reds’ losing streak. He pitched six innings of one-run baseball against the Houston Astros on May 9 to break the eight-game losing streak, and he pitched six innings in a 15-1 rout over the Washington Nationals on May 14 to break a two-game losing streak. Burns is the Reds’ best pitcher right now, and it’s not particularly close. His ERA in the month of May currently sits at 0.47.
Burns has had his struggles with left-handed hitters. Lefties have hit five home runs against him this season, compared to only allowed to right-handed hitters. He’s also walked a lot more lefty batters, 16 to be exact, compared to just two for righties. Regardless of the home runs allowed, he has been able to get batters out with his slider. He’s got a 50% whiff rate with it and 36 of his 55 strikeouts have come off the slider.

Jesús Luzardo
Left-hander Jesús Luzardo is one of the veteran pitchers in the Phillies rotation, having pitched in the major leagues and having played for three different teams since 2019. He’s struggled a bit this season but is coming off a four-hit shutout through six innings against the Boston Red Sox last Thursday. It’s been quite the roller coaster season for Luzardo thus far in 2026. He pitches better away from Citizens Bank Park though, as his away ERA is 1.52 with only four earned runs allowed in 23.2 innings. His home ERA is 8.31 in 26.0 innings, with four home runs allowed.
However, Luzardo has had some bad luck working against him, as evidenced by a .366 BABIP. Despite a high ERA, his FIP is just 2.93. He also ranks in the 85th – 90th percentile in MLB for chase%, whiff%, strikeout%, and walk%, according to Baseball Savant. He also ranks in the top 7% of MLB in not allowing hard contact. However, his WHIP is at 1.33, so he’s still giving up hits for the number of innings he’s pitched. Luzardo’s sweeper is his go-to pitch. He uses it the most, with a 36.7% usage rate, and has a whiff rate of 47.6% this season. Thirty-three of his 61 strikeouts have come off his sweeper alone.
