Conor Benn told he’s “British level” by former world champion

Josh Taylor believes Conor Benn is a “British level” fighter following his win over Regis Prograis.

Benn, coming off a career-best victory over Chris Eubank Jr in November, secured a dominant points win over former world champion, Prograis at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.

Most experts expected the 28-year-old to stop the American, who announced his retirement after the bout and confirmed rumours he was injured heading into the bout.

However, the Essex man laboured to a uninspiring unanimous decision on the undercard of Tyson Fury’s victory over Arslanbek Makhmudov.

And former undisputed super lightweight world champion, Taylor who had a fight of the year contender with Prograis in 2019, believes Benn is not at world level.

“He’s fit and strong and durable and tough,” the 35-year-old said on talkSPORT Boxing.

“But I think he’s very limited in boxing ability.

“He’s been matched perfectly well and fair play for him going to Zuffa and getting the money.

“I just don’t think he’s a world class fighter.

“I think he’s British level, fringe European level.

“I think there’s guys in the UK that would take him out.”

‘The Destroyer’ fought Prograis, 37, at a 150 pound catchweight, as he makes his way back down to the welterweight division, following two bouts with Eubank Jr last year which were contested at middleweight.

Benn is eyeing a showdown with WBC welterweight world champion, Ryan Garcia, however Taylor believes the rapid American would prove too strong for him.

“Conor’s boxing skills I don’t think are very great,” he added.

“He’s been dropped a couple of times with much lesser opponents.

“When he fights these fighters at world level, he’s not going to get away with any of that.

“He couldn’t put an old Prograis away.

“These elite fighters are going to deal with him no problem I reckon.”
