How low can it go for the Kansas City Current? The worst possible scenario may be averted for Jess Fishlock following a frightening-looking injury. Elsewhere, Trinity Rodman, Sophia Wilson, and Gotham FC all rediscover their scoring boots. Ashley Sanchez continues to revel in top notch form, and the Portland Thorns, Boston show signs of improvement, and San Diego Wave trade spots at the top of the table.
Lifeless Kansas City Current in desperate need of a recharge
A two-week international break did the Current no good. After eking out a win over Gotham on April 4, troubling signs reared their ugly head again on Friday night in a 4-0 demolition by the Washington Spirit. Chris Armas’s side showcased a stunning lack of intensity, cohesion, conviction, attacking bite, or defensive stability. When is it time to reset the circuit breaker?
Kansas City was never going to reach the same unprecedented heights they achieved in 2025. However, the drop-off appears more like a free-fall. Through five games, they have met defeat four times; one more than the entirety of the 2025 regular season. They have already shipped 13 goals, matching their total through 30 games last year. After the game, Armas was directly asked about his job security. “I don’t spend one bit of energy thinking my job’s on the line,” he said. “We put ourselves in this job, and it’s always about results. So if that ever comes, that’s part of the business.” The Current will look to rebound away at North Carolina Courage on Saturday.
