Dallas Mavericks select Morez Johnson Jr. with the No. 9 overall pick

The Dallas Mavericks have selected forward Morez Johnson Jr. with the ninth overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.

Johnson is coming off a national championship season with the Michigan Wolverines and will reunite with his college head coach,
Dusty May, who was recently hired as the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.

Johnson, who stands at 6-foot-9 and 250 pounds, certainly has the size to be a plug-and-play forward at the NBA level. He’s a great athlete with excellent finishing ability around the rim and was a crucial contributor and defensive anchor for the Wolverines during their NCAA Tournament run.

This was the first surprise pick of the night, but it wasn’t entirely unexpected that new head coach Dusty May opted to select a prospect he knows well and has already helped develop. Johnson will help fill the void left by Anthony Davis’ departure and joins a frontcourt that includes Cooper Flagg and P.J. Washington.
