Dave Allen was unable to pull off the impossible at the home of Doncaster Rovers FC, as Filip Hrgovic handed him a one-sided beating in a third-round stoppage to take the vacant IBF Intercontinental heavyweight title.
Allen was a wide underdog going into the fight with Hrgovic.
Fan favourite Allen (25-9-2, KO20) is rarely in a dull fight, and after stopping Johnny Fisher in May last year, he was outpointed by Arslanbek Makhmudov before returning to winning ways in February in a low-key comeback.
Hrgovic (20-1, KO15) had won twice since a 2024 loss to Daniel Dubois, the last a points win against David Adeleye in August last year.
Hrgovic began in measured fashion, clubbing Allen with constant 1-2s, and Allen was struggling to time his shots in the opening round.
Hrgovic kept up the pressure, toying with Allen as he unloaded heavy punches in the second, and keeping him on the end of hard right hands.
Allen simply couldn’t get out of the way of the blows coming his way, and after the Croatian pummelled away to body and head Allen’s corner had seen enough, and threw the towel in to save their fighter.
Michael Gomez Jr vs Lee McGregor
Michael Gomez Jr (23-2, KO8) won the crossroads clash at lightweight, stopping former European champion Lee McGregor (16-3-1, KO11) in the sixth round of their scheduled ten-rounder.
McGregor was dropped in the fourth, and after suffering heavy damage, the Scot’s corner threw the towel in for their man midway through the sixth.
Remaining Fights
Louie O’Doherty (12-0, KO3) added the vacant Commonwealth lightweight title to his British crown, as he widely outscored Ahmed Hatim (12-1, KO3) in their meeting.
O’Doherty ran out the victor by two scores of 118-110, and a third tally of 119-109.
The sole eight-rounder was at super welterweight, where Carl Fail (12-0, KO4) was a shutout winner against Luis Enrique Montelongo Morales (18-18, KO4).
