With the impending launch of the Fate of the Phoenix DLC, developer Paradox Tinto has lifted the veil from Europa Universalis 5’s 2026 roadmap, giving us our first look at the grand strategy game’s free updates and the content they aim to introduce.
Three rather chunky patches will be available for all of EU5’s owners as part of its 2026 roadmap, with a fourth confirmed to go live in early 2027.
Europa Universalis 5 2026 Roadmap
Game Director Johan Andersson identified a few pain points guiding the upcoming changes, acknowledging that players “don’t want railroading, but they do want historical paths to feel achievable, not accidental.”
The dynamic historical events that replaced Europa Universalis IV’s mission trees aimed to address this, but haven’t fully managed to do so. According to Andersson, “they need to be more discoverable, more consequential, and more connected to each other” ideally forming “chains, arcs, moments that feel like they were built for the nation they are playing,” helping create a more cohesive emergent story.
Another main issue stems from the AI which, in EU4 had “a personality layer with attitudes, exposed goals, and a sense that the other rulers in the world had intentions you could read and react to.” To this extent, Paradox Tinto is working to give “AI a legible face again.”
These changes and many more will be gradually introduced in the updates part of Europa Universalis V’s 2026 roadmap, which currently takes the following shape:
EU5 Echinades 1.2 Update (May 6, 2026)
- Balkans Content
- Trade Rework
- AI Personalities
- HRE Overhaul
- Papal Authority
- Logistics & Troops
- Bureaucracies
EU5 Pavia 1.3 Update (Summer 2026)
- Great Powers Rework
- QoL & Automation
- Italy Flavor
- Chivalric Orders
- Creditworthiness
- Works of Art
- Rebel Negotiations
- Estate Interactions
EU5 Rio Salado 1.4 Update (Fall 2026)
- Ambitions System
- Expeditions System
- Catholicism Overhaul
- Dynasty Overhaul
- Crusade & Jihad
- Iberia & Maghreb Flavor
EU5 Orleans 1.5 Update (Early 2027)
- Vassal Contracts
- Christian Theology
- Privileges & Duties
Every update, aside from the summer’s patch 1.3, accompanies one of the three DLCs included in Europa Universalis 5’s premium editions.
The article linked above delves deeper into some of them, but a few highlights include the Great Power system being “redesigned around area dominance rather than a score formula, with a new Regional Power tier sitting between being a minor nation and full Great Power status, the Ambitions system allowing us to set tangible long-term goals for our country while “creating dynamic rivalries and diplomatic tension,” alongside reduced profit margins for production buildings, which promise to shake up the economic side of things.
Europa Universalis V’s 2026 roadmap promises a rather busy year with plenty of changes for the grand strategy game, while its DLCs aim to add more regional flavor rather than introduce additional sweeping changes.
The developer’s plans extend beyond early 2027, and it has confirmed that they include adding new start dates to EU5.
