Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has made a strong statement about the future of Chennai Super Kings leadership. Speaking on his YouTube channel Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin said he believes Sanju Samson will eventually lead the franchise.
Ashwin described Samson as the “heir-apparent” in CSK’s long-term captaincy plan. He feels the team is building towards a smooth transition, rather than making a sudden change at the top.
He explained that current captain Ruturaj Gaikwad will likely continue leading for now. This gives Samson enough time to settle into the setup before taking over the role in the future.
Ashwin pointed out that Samson’s leadership qualities stand out. He said Samson listens to feedback and connects well with players, calling it a “humane connection” that is important in a team environment.
He also spoke about how narratives often shape leadership choices in cricket. However, Samson’s growing popularity and strong fan base make him a natural fit for CSK’s next phase after MS Dhoni.
Samson’s recent performances have added weight to this idea. His century against Delhi Capitals this season has shown a clear improvement in his game and confidence.
Ashwin also highlighted how Samson’s arrival has helped CSK rethink their batting order. This could allow Gaikwad to shift to No. 3, giving the team more balance at the top.
Lead in His Own Way
Ashwin made it clear that Samson should not feel pressure to follow past legends. He stressed that trying to copy someone like Dhoni can hold a player back instead of helping him grow.
“I think the mantle has already been passed on,” Ashwin said. “Ruturaj has been running the show for the last two to three years along with Fleming.”
He added, “The one thing I wouldn’t want for Sanju is stepping into anybody’s shoes. You don’t have to step into anybody’s legacy.”
Ashwin believes true leadership comes from being original.
“He’s got his own unique clothing in which he lives, and I would like to see his own imprint on it,” he said.
With CSK quietly planning for the future, Ashwin’s comments have added an interesting angle to the team’s leadership story.
