Henrik Djernis was the first mountain biker to win the UCI Elite Men’s XC World Championship three times. He won those titles in 1992, 1993 and 1994.
According to his biography on Wikepdia, Djernis was a major cyclocross star in Denmark, where he reportedly won the junior men’s title in 1983 and ’84, and then won men’s national title every year from 1985 through 1998, as well as in 2000 and 2001.
Ironically, he never finished in the top three of the year-end UCI Mountain Bike World Cup rankings.
Henrik Djernis has been nominated for the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame by Tom Ritchey, but he has yet to be elected to that group.
