There’s a competition going on between Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray for the QB 1 position, and one could say it’s not a friendly competition, at least according to McCarthy’s remarks.
During OTAs this week, both quarterbacks were asked about how they’re working with each other as the Vikings decide who gets the starting position. Murray’s answer was warm and fuzzy, but McCarthy’s wasn’t.
“It’s been great. Obviously, he’s a younger guy, so any way I can help him, I feel like I played seven years going on eight,” Kyler Murray said to The Athletic’s Alec Lewis. “I’m considered a veteran even though I don’t see myself as that. Giving him any knowledge he needs.”
“It’s just like two guys in a classroom,” McCarthy said, according to Lewis. “He sits on one side, and I sit on the other side. It’s the coaches’ responsibility to teach us and coach us.”
McCarthy’s comments have drawn reaction, and now, one former Cowboys quarterback is speaking out with his thoughts.
Ex-Cowboys quarterback rips apart J.J. McCarthy
Former NFL quarterback Ben DiNucci, who was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, took a swing at McCarthy for his comments and even went so far to say that his “attitude” isn’t one of a quarterback in the NFL.
“JJ, this is the NFL brother,” DiNucci stated on X on Thursday, “This type of attitude doesn’t fly at the QB position. You have too many people watching how you talk / act.”
It’s true that McCarthy should choose his words wisely when serving as a quarterback in the league. But, McCarthy is still just 23 years old, and it’s understandable that in the heat of the moment, he is just saying his feelings out loud. It’s easy to forget that these NFL players are just human, and considering the buzz Murray is getting over his new role with the Vikings, McCarthy is just expressing how he feels about the situation. You can’t fault him for that.
