This series is inspired by the must read book “All Caps, Stories That Justify an Outrageous Hat Collection” by Craig Colby. Craig wrote this book about the many caps he has and the stories behind it. Anyhow, this series will be about the caps I own and the stories behind them.
This episode of “Personal Stories About Ballcaps” is about the cap of the Fort Wayne Wizards. Not that I played for this club or that I saw a game there, no, but I “craved” this ball cap since the first time I saw it.
Back in the day, when I still liked MLB, I always bought a preview on the MLB season. In one of them (Petersen’s or The Sporting News) I saw an advertisement of a baseball store selling merchandise. There were plenty of minor league caps on the photo. One of them was the one of the Fort Wayne Wizards. In those days (I guess it was 1994), I did not know much about Minor League Baseball, but what I knew was that I liked that Wizards cap a lot.

About ten years later, in 2004, I got introduced to Minor League Baseball thanks to a baseball forum I was a member of. In those days, the word wide web started its run and slowly I discovered the world of Minor League Baseball.
But somehow I never could lay my hand on that great cap. Sold out or lack of money because I needed it for more important things. And in 2005, the Wizards changed logos and also the cap logo changed. So my chance to buy one online was gone.

Since my divorce in 2020, my cap collection grew exorbitantly, but no matter how well I looked on E-bay and on European vintage websites, I could not find a good specimen. Or it was too small, or it was too big, or the condition was very poor. Until January of this year. I bumped into one in perfect condition with no “tm” sign underneath the logo. This was the real deal. The price was rather steep, about $50.00, but I knew I had to pay this if I wanted a perfect item like this. There was no option of making a bid, so after some short mulling, I pressed the buy-button.
After two weeks, I received the package, right in time for my birthday. So finally, after 32 years, the eagle had landed.
