Coventry City’s dominant EFL Championship season has them on the verge of returning to England’s top-flight.
Frank Lampard’s squad can clinch promotion to the English Premier League on Friday by earning at least one point from a road trip to Blackburn Rovers. It would seal the Sky Blues’ return to the top-flight since last being relegated in 2001.
Despite not officially sealing the deal last weekend at home against Sheffield Wednesday, Lampard isn’t worried about where his team clinches promotion, as long as they just do it.
“I keep being asked whether it’s better when you do it at home, win it away or win it when you’re driving home on the M40 as another result happens,” Lampard said postmatch on Saturday. “But I don’t care how we win it. In fact, my experience of winning the Premier League has been at Stamford Bridge and it’s been at Bolton away, and Bolton away was the best. So we’ll see.”
Promotion would be a memorable moment for not Coventry City, its players, and its fans, but also for American striker Haji Wright. Wright, 28, joined the club from Turkish side Antalyaspor in August 2023 and has become one of the Sky Blues’ leading stars.
Wright has eclipsed double-digit goals in each of his three seasons in England and currently has 17 goals this season in all competitions. The U.S. men’s national team attacker could still reach the 20-goal plateau this spring, which would mark the first time he’s reached that mark in his career.
Although Wright has endured some up-and-down spells this season, Lampard has continued to trust him to lead the line. It’s certainly likely that Lampard’s trust will continue over the final few matches this spring, knowing that Wright’s impact has played a major part in Coventry City being on the verge of making club history.
