Honkbal Week Haarlem: Day 4 – mister-baseball.com

Although there were only two games on the fourth day of Honkbal Week Haarlem, the results added some intrigue to the standings. The opener between Czech Republic and Taiwan was a thriller, while Italy cooled Curaçao’s bats in the nightcap. The result places the Italian baseball nine at the top of the leaderboard, with the Netherlands one game behind. The other four teams, however, are now all tied for third place.

Czech Republic 1 – Taiwan 0
The game featured a pair of dominant starting pitchers, with Jan Novák for Baseball Czech and Yi-Wei Lin for Taiwan both tossing gems. Novák held the East Asian nation hitless until the fourth, while an inning later, Hsiao-Yun Chen became the only opponent to advance to scoring position in the game, where he was stranded. The Czech outfield, in particular, had a fine defensive day. With two outs in the sixth, Matěj Vlach knocked a base hit, then raced home from first base on a line drive by Šimon Blažek that rolled all the way to the wall in center. Vojtěch Ventruba fired three hitless frames to secure the victory.

Italy 11 – Curaçao 3
The Azzurri remains unbeaten after a resounding victory over Curaçao, picking up 14 hits compared to four by their Caribbean opponents. The game was close until the sixth, when the Italians exploded for nine runs thanks to seven consecutive baserunners via hit or walk, with Miguel Fabrizio finishing things off with a booming double. It was not until the eighth that Curaçao picked up its second safety thanks to starter Javier Fandiño’s five strong innings and Omar Benelli’s two shutout frames.
