Hungaroring upgrades continue as major track resurfacing begins ahead of F1 Hungarian GP

F1 | Hungaroring steps up renovation works: resurfacing begins on new sections of the track

The Hungaroring is continuing its extensive redevelopment programme ahead of the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix, now entering a crucial phase focused on resurfacing key areas of the circuit. Following the structural upgrades completed in 2024, work has now expanded beyond the main straight to include additional sections of the layout, including the final sector, as part of a long-term plan to secure the venue’s future in Formula 1.

With less than two months to go before Formula 1 returns to Budapest, the Hungaroring has once again become an active construction site. After the major transformation launched in 2024—which included the introduction of a brand-new main grandstand and a complete overhaul of the paddock facilities—the circuit is now completing another important step in its modernization strategy, this time focusing directly on the racing surface.

In addition to the start-finish straight, which was already fully resurfaced last season, work is now progressing on other parts of the track, including the final sector. These operations, which resumed in recent weeks following the winter cold, are being carried out in carefully planned phases to ensure everything is completed within the timeframe required for the upcoming Grand Prix.

This latest stage is part of a broader redevelopment project that began in 2024, aimed at guaranteeing the Hungaroring’s long-term presence on the Formula 1 calendar. Securing a multi-year contract extension required modern infrastructure, upgraded facilities that meet current standards, and a venue capable of handling increasing spectator numbers as well as the growing range of off-track activities associated with a Formula 1 weekend.

For this reason, significant investment has been made not only in the surrounding structures but also in the track itself. The first phase of the project primarily focused on the main straight area, including the complete resurfacing of the start/finish section and the reconstruction of grandstands and the main building complex. However, that phase represented only the beginning of a much larger plan.

As outlined in the original redevelopment proposal presented in 2024, a full resurfacing of the entire circuit was always part of the long-term vision—an operation that had not been carried out since 2016. Now, with the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix approaching, the circuit has entered this next critical phase.

Alongside the already completed work on the main straight, crews are now focusing on other sections of the track, including the final sector. This progress has been documented in images shared by Jarno Zaffelli, who is overseeing the project through his company, Dromo.

This marks a key milestone in the Hungaroring’s transformation, as the circuit aims to present itself in the coming years with fully modernized infrastructure that meets the evolving demands of modern Formula 1, both in terms of performance standards and fan experience.
