Dave Allen returned to the ring last night, headlining at his home football ground in Doncaster as he took on Filip Hrgovic.
Allen was beaten in three rounds by The Ring Magazine’s number five-ranked heavyweight, Hrgovic.
He spoke to TalkSport in the ring after the loss and explained why he initially took the fight and how, despite preparing better than in most of his previous camps, he was simply not good enough on the night.
“Yeah you know I took the fight it was like a winning lottery ticket if you could call it that.
“I just weren’t good enough and that’s fine he is a very good fighter I knew he was good [coming into the fight.]
“Yeah he was really good actually, fair play to him he was good.
“He was too good for me and that’s fine I have lost to Frazer Clarke and sometimes you do just get beat and you have to say ‘Do you know what I was just second best’ and that was another one of those tonight.”
After the win, ‘El Animal’ spoke to Pro Boxing Fans and discussed a possible fight with 21-year-old Moses Itauma.
Itauma is pencilled in to return on August 8th in London, so with Hrgovic scoring an early win the date may be possible.
‘The White Rhino’ continued to discuss the event itself, having sold around 10,000 tickets in what was his first appearance in Doncaster since a third-round stoppage win over Jindrich Velecky in 2015.
“I am just so proud of myself bringing all of these people here tonight, I am so grateful.
“What can you say really, I have gotten beat but I am happy I got a bit of closure.”
Allen discussed his preparations for the fight. He weighed in at 17st 10lbs, the lightest he had tipped the scales since 2019.
Despite his efforts, he wasn’t able to get the desired result yet seemed happy with his performance.
“I trained as hard as I could and I put a right shift in.
“I felt like I was boxing pretty well, he was just too good for me and I can live with it.
“I am a good fighter but tonight I can finally sit down at home and say ‘I trained really hard but I wasn’t good enough’ and that is fine.”
Allen, ever loved for his honesty and vulnerability during interviews, revealed a touching factor as to why he started boxing.
“I started boxing so people would like me, I wanted my old man to like me really and I’m not sure if he does but everyone else does.

“I feel like a winner, I just got absolutely hammered yet I feel like a winner.”
With his coach Jamie Moore calling the contest off in the third, some claimed Allen should have seen the fourth round, including his father while speaking to talkSPORT.
The 34-year-old chose to back his team while admitting the affection he holds for them after over six years of training in Manchester.
Over the last six years Allen has turned his fortunes around, earning life-changing purses from fights to help support his family.
He continued to discuss future plans and how he may eye a shot at the British heavyweight title, currently held by Richard Riakporhe.
“I can fight another day, the British title.”
“The stoppage, I love Jamie [Moore] & Nigel [Travis], they look after my best interests and I can come back and fight another day; whether that is for the British title I am not so sure.”

“[Richard] Riakporhe is very very good, they are all good fighters but I want a bit of a rest now.”
“I am as fit as I have ever been, I am enjoying my training and I am enjoying my life and hopefully I can have another little good run at it.”
