Since 1979, the Swiss brand iXS has been developing products for two-wheeled sports. Originally focused solely on motorcycling, the range later expanded to include cycling gear, from apparel and protective equipment to helmets. The iXS Trigger X MIPS is just one example from the brand’s extensive portfolio.
In our test colour Off White, the Trigger X keeps things visually pleasantly understated. The overall design is among the more subtle in this test field and, in terms of proportions, it sits on a similar level to the Alpina ROOTAGE EVO. It appears well balanced and clearly less bulky than helmets like the Fox Dropframe Pro and the Bluegrass Jetro.
At 568 g, the iXS sits comfortably in the middle of the test field in terms of weight, alongside the Troy Lee Designs Stage Stunt, which is just 10 g lighter. When it comes to adjustability, the helmet scores with a classic and functional rear adjustment dial with plastic support arms. It’s easy to reach and can be operated without any trouble, even with gloves on.
The helmet comes as standard with 15 mm cheek pads, while 20 mm versions are available from iXS as an optional extra for €9.90. A shame, as Fox and Urge include these alternatives straight out of the box. The cheek pads can be cleaned with a gentle 30 °C wash cycle. The Trigger X MIPS uses a magnetic FIDLOCK buckle that can be opened and closed with just one hand. As the name suggests, it also features an integrated MIPS system, which is designed to reduce rotational forces acting on the head during a crash. With a price tag of €239.00, the Trigger X sits in the middle of the test field. That places it slightly below the most expensive models, though it can hardly be described as a bargain.

In our office, the helmet quickly sparked debate. Do we all have such a massive head? For several testers, the Trigger X MIPS created uncomfortable pressure just in front of the ears. Even with the thinner 15 mm cheek pads, comfort in this area still lagged behind the competition, with noticeable pressure on the jaw. Riders with narrower faces may get along well with the helmet and won’t experience this issue, but among our testers there were only a few such candidates. As a result, overall comfort falls slightly short of the competition, which also slightly undermines the sense of security.
When it comes to ventilation, the iXS, with its 19 vents, sits on a similar level to the Alpina. That being said, it doesn’t feel quite as airy. One reason is the comparatively generous interior padding. The visor, on the other hand, was among the best in this test. Adjustment is straightforward, the position can be changed quickly, and the helmet gives a high-quality overall impression in terms of finish. There was only one minor flaw. The “Trigger X” logo on our test helmet started to peel off after just four weeks, right after the photo shoot.

Conclusions about the iXS Trigger X MIPS
The iXS Trigger X MIPS is a solid MTB helmet with ear protection, provided the fit suits your head shape. It tends to work better for riders with narrower faces in particular. Visually, the helmet impresses with its clean and understated design. Details such as the well-functioning FIDLOCK buckle also prove practical in everyday use. In direct comparison with the rest of the test field, however, the Trigger X has to concede some ground when it comes to comfort and the overall sense of security.
