England have received a major boost ahead of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s, with young all-rounder Jacob Bethell declared fit and ready to play after recovering from a finger injury.
England head coach Brendon McCullum confirmed that Bethell’s left ring finger has healed well and will not affect any part of his game. The 22-year-old is expected to contribute with both bat and ball and has come through training without any concerns.
Bethell suffered the injury while representing Royal Challengers Bengaluru during the IPL 2026 season in a match against Punjab Kings. Following the setback, the England and Wales Cricket Board and RCB agreed to send him back to the UK before the IPL playoffs so England’s medical staff could closely monitor his recovery.

The positive signs continued in England’s training sessions. Bethell was seen fielding comfortably in the gully region, while McCullum expressed confidence that he will also provide a valuable bowling option during the series.
England have handed Bethell a significant responsibility by placing him at No. 3 in the batting order. He will take the spot previously occupied by Ollie Pope, a role that is often considered one of the most demanding positions in Test cricket.
His selection has sparked discussion because of his limited recent red-ball experience. Due to a busy white-ball schedule, Bethell has played only one four-day County Championship match since August 2024.
However, McCullum dismissed concerns over the lack of first-class cricket. The England coach said there would be “no excuses” and backed the left-hander’s temperament and preparation. He praised Bethell for remaining calm under pressure and for the detailed way he approaches his cricket.
England’s faith in Bethell has grown rapidly since his breakthrough performance in the Ashes earlier this year. The youngster announced himself on the Test stage with a memorable century against Australia in Sydney during the final Test in January, a knock that strengthened his case for a permanent place in the side.
Now fully fit and trusted with a key batting role, Bethell will have another big opportunity to prove himself when England begin their Test series against New Zealand at Lord’s.
