JBL is giving Chad Gable and Ludwig Kaiser their flowers after their bloody Mask vs. Mask match at AAA Noche de Los Grandes.
The WWE Hall of Famer was on commentary for the May 30 match, where Ludwig Kaiser’s El Grande Americano defeated Chad Gable’s Original El Grande Americano. The loss forced Gable to remove his mask in front of the crowd, ending one of AAA’s biggest storylines of the year.
Fans have been praising the match since it happened, and JBL clearly feels the same way. Speaking on Busted Open, he said the Mexican crowd helped make the moment feel massive.
“Mexican fans are just passionate fans. They love their Lucha Libre and they love their stars. They get into things and they enjoy it. That’s what you saw – them at their very best.”
JBL said the match showed pro wrestling at its highest level and admitted he was blown away by what Gable and Kaiser pulled off.
“And I thought you saw wrestling at its very best. I was absolutely blown away by what they did in the match.”
He gave Kaiser a lot of credit for building the El Grande Americano character the right way, especially by learning the language and understanding the audience in Mexico.
“Kaiser created all this. Kaiser created all this with learning the language, not just learning the language – as we used to say in Texas, he wasn’t learning Spanish, he was learning Mexican. The local dialect language was what he was learning, which was absolutely amazing, what he’s done.”
JBL also pointed out that Gable’s work in Mexico was not the same as playing a goofy heel on WWE television. He said getting real heat in Mexico is a completely different challenge.
“When Chad first came back, we’re sitting there thinking about it, it’s easy to be a campy heel like he was in WWE with the videos with the varsity club or whatever the heck it was. But then all of a sudden to try to get heat down in Mexico, that’s different level. It’s not even the same business.”
JBL then went all in on Gable, calling him the best wrestler in the world and saying the match with Kaiser was on another level.
“I think Chad Gable’s the best wrestler in the world, and I don’t think it’s close. That was absolutely amazing what he and Kaiser did.”
That is huge praise from JBL, especially after a match that already had fans talking. Gable losing the mask was a major moment, but JBL’s comments make it clear he believes both men delivered something bigger than just another stipulation match.
The El Grande Americano story gave Kaiser and Gable a chance to prove themselves in front of one of wrestling’s toughest crowds, and JBL believes they nailed it.
