John Cena just gave fans a wild explanation for why he laid hands on Cody Rhodes, and his answer was not some deep wrestling science breakdown. According to Cena, he was basically going through it.
During a fan Q&A at SpaceCon San Antonio, a young fan named Christian stepped up and asked Cena the question plenty of WWE fans still had on their minds. Why did he beat up Cody Rhodes? Cena did not duck the question. He leaned right into it and admitted that version of himself was dealing with what he called a midlife crisis.
“Christian, great great question. I was I was going through what you would call a midlife crisis and I got a lot of respect for Cody Rhodess.”
Cena then explained that his first clash with Cody came while that “midlife crisis” was at its worst. By the time they ran it back at SummerSlam, Cena said things were different, and that dark cloud was behind him.
“Uh the first time we fought that was kind of like peak midlife crisis and then when we had a rematch in SummerSlam, I think that midlife crisis was in the rearview mirror.”
Cena also admitted there is a little regret attached to how things went down the first time around. Still, he believes the SummerSlam rematch helped smooth things over between them.
“So, I may look back on the first one with a little bit of guilt, but I like to think we made up for it at SummerSlam. So, thank you very much.”
That is a pretty funny way for Cena to explain one of his more shocking moments with Cody Rhodes. Instead of dressing it up like some master plan, Cena chalked it up to a rough personal chapter and gave Cody his respect at the same time.
Cena may be retired now, but moments like this show he can still keep fans locked in with one answer. Whether he was joking, working, or giving a little truth under the WWE polish, the comment adds another layer to his story with Cody Rhodes.
What do you think about John Cena blaming his attack on Cody Rhodes on a midlife crisis? Was that a funny answer, or should he have gone deeper with it? Let us know what you think in the comments.
