John Chayka appears to view Matthew Knies as a long-term piece for the Maple Leafs
The new Toronto Maple Leafs management team of John Chayka and Mats Sundin have a pressure-packed offseason ahead of them. Having missed the playoffs for the first time in 2025-26 under Brad Treliving, and with captain Auston Matthews two years away from another expiring deal, Chayka and Sundin are going to have to navigate a re-tool and find a way to get the Leafs back to the playoffs in 2026-27. Winning the draft lottery helps, of course, but still a daunting task nonetheless.
In a recent article by Luke Fox of Sportsnet, he took questions from the fanbase in a mailbag type of piece, and one of the questions was regarding Matthew Knies and his future in Toronto.
In Fox’s response, he passed along a quote from Chayka, who recently replaced Treliving as general manager, regarding Knies and what his first impressions of him are.
“Knies is a really unique player,” Chayka told Fox. “I think his blend of size and skating and skill is really, really hard to find. I’m not aware of what happened at the deadline or what previous regimes thought. I think Mats and I are going to go through and evaluate the roster and make some decisions.”
Knies is truly a unicorn of sorts, as Chayka alluded to. His blend of size and skill and the rapid pace of which he’s improved his game since getting to the NHL isn’t something that grows on trees, and Chayka appears to understand the riches of having Knies on a cheap contract for the next five years.
However, it was reported by Elliotte Friedman that the Leafs were testing the waters on a trade for Knies. Chayka remained mum on that topic, but certainly didn’t seem like he had any interest in trading Knies.
Chayka’s next step in Toronto will be meeting with Matthews, and eventually, deciding the fate of head coach Craig Berube. Verdicts from both of those conversations should become a lot clearer in the following weeks.
