In what has become a somewhat regular occurrence, the Green Bay Packers will have a new-look defense in 2026. Earlier this year, Jonathan Gannon was hired as the fourth defensive coordinator of head coach Matt LaFleur‘s tenure. Jeff Hafley, his predecessor, was hired as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins.
Despite being hired months ago, Gannon did not address the Green Bay media until Monday. While there have been rumors and speculation about the kind of defense he was going to employ, the new Packers defensive coordinator finally laid out his own vision for his new team’s strategy.
He also addressed the cornerback position, and had a pretty clear message from the players coming back.
Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon will not guarantee Keisean Nixon a starting job

One of Green Bay’s most important tasks this off-season was improving the cornerback position. To put it plainly, the players the Packers had the position last year simply were not good enough. Nate Hobbs was released following his sub-par season, and Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine both allowed passer ratings over 100 when targeted.
Benjamin St-Juste was signed in free agency, and Green Bay drafted two new cornerbacks in the 2026 NFL Draft.
As the team prepares for the 2026 season, their new defensive coordinator would not guarantee any of the returning veterans a starting job:
“I love where the room is at right now. Obviously, we acquired two new guys in the draft and I think that’ll be good competition, but everybody right now is kind of competing for their role right now. Roles are not defined by any means.”
Brandon Cisse was selected in the second round of the draft, and was Green Bay’s first pick. Domani Jackson was selected in the sixth round.
Both Nixon and Valentine are in the final years of their contracts with the Packers. This is notable because the team could choose to give them significant playing time in hopes they sign bigger contracts elsewhere in 2027 and net them some compensatory picks.
However, if the goal is to win, the Packers should not concern themselves with hypothetical situations. The best players should play the most, which could mean less playing time for their returning veterans.
