Max Domi’s struggles highlighted in expanded role with Maple Leafs this season
Entering his third season with the Toronto Maple Leafs after a strong 2024-25 playoffs where Max Domi posted seven points across 13 games, the forward took a step back in what was a disappointing season, fitting the theme of the 2025-26 regular season.

Domi remains under contract until the completion of the 2027-28 season with a $3.75 million AAV, holding a 13-team no-trade clause next season before having no protection in the final year of the four-year $15 million contract that he originally signed on July 1, 2024.

How the season went

This year for Domi was one of the toughest in his 11-year career. Domi appeared in 80 games, recording 12 goals and 24 assists, posting a plus-minus rating of minus-29, the second-worst mark on the Maple Leafs, ahead of only Matthew Knies, who was minus-30.

The 36 points were the fewest that Domi has recorded in a season where he appeared in at least 70 games. The forward struggled throughout the better part of this season, highlighted not only by his minus-29, but also by head coach Craig Berube’s decision to scratch Domi for the first time during his Maple Leafs tenure. This is what Berube had to say about Domi at the time of the scratching.

“It’s just getting more engaged in the game. Like, he’s got to get dirty down low in the offensive zone, win battles and get more engaged that way. When he’s skating and moving, he is an effective player,” Berube said in December. “But it’s too inconsistent.”

The inconsistencies were shown throughout the year as Domi went through a stretch to open the season with one point over the first nine games, then posted 22 of his 36 points over the course of 29 games from December through January. Then, to close out the year, Domi posted only four points over his final 15 contests.

The moment many Maple Leafs fans will take from Domi’s season happened on March 30 during the second matchup of the year with the Anaheim Ducks. After Radko Gudas’ knee-on-knee hit on Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews, Domi responded in the second meeting, dropping the gloves off the opening faceoff with the Ducks captain, getting retribution for the injury caused to Matthews.

Domi’s underlying numbers really state just how tough a year it was for the Maple Leafs forward. Domi ranked in the lower echelon on nearly every advanced metric throughout the course of his regular season, whether it was in the offensive or defensive zone.

Domi spent a large portion of the season operating as the Maple Leafs second line center. This translated into Domi being on the ice for 64 goals against, the fifth-most on the team, trailing Morgan Rielly, Jake McCabe, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and John Tavares.

Facing opposing team’s top-six forward groups is not a role that suits Domi as the feisty player anymore. Domi still possesses the ability to agitate teams skating in a lower spot in the forward group, but a 3.77 GA/60, good for the 11th highest in the NHL, won’t cut it if the Maple Leafs are set on returning to the playoffs.
