Isn’t it heavy? What happens when it gets wet? Aren’t you worried it might snap? These are a few of the questions most cyclists ask on the rare occasion a wooden bike rolls up at the cafe. In the eyes of Axalko’s Felipe Luzuriaga, the answers are very simple: ‘no’, ‘nothing’ and ‘why would I be?’
‘People hear “wood” and picture traditional carpentry,’ he tells Cyclist. ‘But what we do is much closer to high-end composite engineering. We micro-laminate the wood, creating a structure that’s three times stronger than standard aluminium alloys. But the real magic is the ride feel.’
