The Dallas Stars will likely be very similar next season, but they could move someone to restock their cupboards
Mark Lazerus of The Athletic: How high is Dallas Stars GM Jim Nill willing to go for his 26-year-old, three-time 40-goal scorer Jason Robertson? Could he look to move the pending RFA to restock his depleted prospect and draft pool?
Nill could also look at moving veteran Matt Duchene or injury-prone Roope Hintz. You also couldn’t blame them if they wanted to run it back next season. Coach Glen Gulutzan expects to basically have the same group back next season. They’ve been true contenders for the past four years and have nothing to show for it.
The Ottawa Senators Don’t Need to Make Any Drastic Moves
Do the Edmonton Oilers move a couple of players to then refill those holes?
Sean Gentille and Chris Johnston of The Athletic: Connor McDavid‘s two-year extension is about to kick in, and the Edmonton Oilers are on the clock again to turn it around. It’s not going to be easy with limited assets, something McDavid has been aware of since he signed the extension.
“There’s no secret,” McDavid said in October, “that with a team that pushes for it every year like we have for the last number of years — four or five years we’ve given up first-round picks and prospects and all of that stuff — there’s not a ton of young guys (coming up in the organization), you know?”
Management convinced him there is a plan, and he helped them out with his $12.5 million cap hit.
The Oilers have been talking swings in free agency, with little success, and letting Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg walk has hurt them. They gave up a first for Jake Walman (signed for seven years), a second (from the Blues – Holloway) for Trent Frederic (and then signed for eight years).
Then there’s the goaltending. Tristan Jarry is under contract for two more years at $5.375 million. Connor Ingram took over the starting role towards the end of the season. The Oilers may try to move on from Jarry. Ingram is a pending UFA in a class that contains Stuart Skinner, Frederik Andersen, Vitek Vanecek, David Rittich and Sergei Bobrovsky. The Oilers could test the trade market to see if they can pry Jordan Binnington out of St. Louis or Adin Hill from division rival Vegas Golden Knights.
Being able to move Darnell Nurse‘ four years at $9.25 million would free up some cap room. He’s got a no-movement clause, but they may need to try.
