Plays of the Year – Herbig’s first INT sets up Metcalf’s first TD with Steelers

Steel City Underground presents our 2025 Plays of the Year series: a weekly rewind through the biggest moments, breakout performances, and unforgettable highlights from last season’s Pittsburgh Steelers campaign.

Following every NFL game in 2025, Steel City Underground parsed the best plays from the Pittsburgh Steelers to highlight for Steelers Nation fans to rewatch, complete with what led up to the big play(s).

Ahead of Week 2 of the 2025 NFL regular season game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks at Acrisure Stadium, the media tried to fan the flames of a potential revenge game for wide receiver D.K. Metcalf against his former team. Metcalf didn’t bite, saying, “Y’all are going to make it a big deal. I’m not… It’s just another football game.”

Metcalf did, however, get the opportunity to hurt Seattle by scoring a touchdown, his first with the Steelers. And teammate Nick Herbig earned a career first to set that score up.

Late in the second quarter, Cameron Heyward tipped a Sam Darnold pass that Herbig secured for his first career interception. The turnover and 41-yard return gave the Steelers offense the ball at the Seattle 21-yard line.

Aaron Rodgers threw an incomplete pass on the first play of a six-play drive before finding Metcalf on a pass to the left. The Seahawks’ offsides penalty was declined due to the nine-yard gain. Running back Jaylen Warren rushed for a first down on the next play and gained seven yards on the following two carries.

On 3rd-and-goal from the Seattle 2-yard line, Rodgers allowed Jonnu Smith to motion to the far right, moving a defender away from Metcalf and creating a one-on-one matchup. Rodgers threw the ball high and allowed Metcalf to outmuscle the Seattle defender for the touchdown.

The Steelers opted to go for the two-point conversion. Rodgers hit tight end Darnell Washington for the successful conversion to put Pittsburgh ahead 14-7 just before halftime.

Check back each week as we continue spotlighting the plays that defined the Steelers’ 2025 season — one moment at a time.
