After watching Malik Willis step in as a competent backup to Jordan Love last season, the Packers are looking to find both the most reliable understudy for their franchise quarterback as well as the right long-term developmental prospect to keep around on the roster.
After signing Tyrod Taylor, who is entrenched as Love’s veteran backup, there could be a heated competition about to kick up during training camp later this summer for the Packers’ No. 3 quarterback role, and already a clear frontrunner may be emerging.
Are the Packers about to move on from Kyle McCord?
When training camp kicks off next month, the battle between Kyle McCord and Kyron Drones may be one of the more intriguing storylines playing out in Green Bay.
According to Dominik Zawartko of ClutchPoints, Drones may already be the clubhouse leader.
“Drones has also been mentioned at differing positions and offering the Packers’ updated looks out of the Wildcat formation, so it’s clear the offensive coaches are already scheming up ways they can us him in the offense,” Zawartko wrote.
“In terms of this quarterback battle, we have to give the slight edge to Kyron Drones which could put Kyle McCord’s roster spot in jeopardy.”
Drones’ mobility combined with the fact that he was handpicked by general manager Brian Gutekunst and head coach Matt LaFleur may give him the inside track to securing a roster spot for the Packers, this summer.
