The Rangers have fired Jed Ortmeyer, who was previously the Director of Player Development. Ortmeyer was hired into this role in 2017 by Jeff Gorton, so believe it or not he was not a Chris Drury hire. In Ortmeyer’s 9 years, the Rangers have come under fire for having significant player development problems and have been seemingly unable to develop any player that actually had skill. Those concerns were exaggerated, though only slightly, as there have been hits, but many, many more misses.
While many are using this as a reason to celebrate, let’s remind ourselves that the Rangers haven’t named a replacement yet. Tanner Glass is next in line as the Assistant Director of Player Personnel, followed by Marc Staal. Ideally the Rangers go outside the organization to fix a pretty big need in the organization. But let’s see how this plays out.
