Arsenal visit Spanish giants Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday evening.

The Gunners returned to the top of the Premier League table courtesy of a 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday, and manager Mikel Arteta will be desperate to see his side return from the Spanish capital with a positive result ahead of a crucial run of games.

Next up for Arsenal in the Premier League is a London derby against Fulham, before the second leg of their European semi back at The Emirates.

In the meantime, it has emerged that the north London side are interested in a La Liga defender.

As reported by CaughtOffside, Real Madrid defender Alvaro Carreras has emerged as a possible target for Arsenal ahead of the summer window.

The left-back joined Real last summer from Portuguese side Benfica for a fee of around £43 million, having impressed during his spell in Lisbon.

So far this term the full-back has continued to impress, emerging as one of the best young full-backs in Europe.

It is claimed that the Gunners are beginning to search for possible targets to bolster their squad in defence, and Carreras has emerged as an ideal candidate.

The 23-year-old previously spent time with Manchester United, joining the Red Devils as a free agent in 2020 after his contract with Real expired.

During his time with United, the defender had loan spells with Preston North End, Granada, and Benfica, before joining the Portuguese outfit permanently in 2024.

Carreras failed to make a senior appearance during his time at Old Trafford, but has already featured 38 times for Real across all competitions so far this term, providing two assists and scoring twice.

The Spaniard’s contract with the La Liga giants is set to run until 2031, but the repot suggests that doesn’t necessarily rule out the possibility of a transfer this summer.
