Stats never lie. Mumbai Indians (MI) have had all of their success in the Indian Premier League (IPL) when Rohit Sharma was the captain of the team. Rohit took over the captaincy in 2013 and carried the responsibility till 2023.
From this time period, 2013 to 2023, in ten years, MI claimed 5 IPL trophies and established themselves as one of the most successful teams in the league. Before and after Rohit Sharma’s regime, multiple names led the team, but none of them got the desired success.
Key Points
- Mumbai Indians have won all five of their IPL titles under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy.
- MI have struggled badly since Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit as captain in 2024.
- Fans are now demanding Rohit Sharma’s return as Mumbai Indians captain.
Only Rohit Sharma has been able to bring the trophy for MI

Mumbai Indians Captains by Year
- 2024–2026: Hardik Pandya
- 2013–2023: Rohit Sharma (won 5 titles: 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020)
- 2013: Ricky Ponting (stepped down mid-season)
- 2010: Dwayne Bravo (one-off match)
- 2008–2012: Harbhajan Singh
- 2008: Shaun Pollock (led in Tendulkar’s absence)
- 2008–2011: Sachin Tendulkar
- Kieron Pollard also led the team on several occasions between 2014 and 2021.
The Mumbai Indians team management brought in Hardik Pandya to replace Rohit Sharma as the future captain. Before rejoining MI in 2024, as the captain, Pandya enjoyed a fair amount of success with the Gujarat Titans (GT). Hardik Pandya was the captain of the Gujarat Titans (GT) for two seasons, 2022 and 2023.
Hardik Pandya remains far from Rohit’s legacy
He led the team to their maiden IPL title in their debut year (2022) and to the final in 2023 before returning to the Mumbai Indians in 2024. Witnessing the emergence of captain Hardik Pandya with GT, the MI team management brought him in a controversial move ahead of the IPL 2024 season. The desperation shown by the team management was proof that they took a heavy bet on the seam bowling all-rounder.
The success Pandya gained with the Gujarat Titans is yet to be achieved with the Mumbai Indians. The team in Blue’s last IPL trophy-winning season was back in 2020. The ongoing season is almost over for them, so 6 seasons without a trophy.

Another disappointing ending for the Mumbai Indians
In the ongoing season, the Mumbai-based team has managed to win only 3 matches from 11 games. For 8 defeats and a negative net run rate of -0.585, they are situated at the ninth spot of the ten-team league. Only the Lucknow Super Giants are behind them in the ladder. Hardik Pandya has missed multiple matches already due to injury concerns.
In place of Hardik, Suryakumar Yadav played as the stand-in captain. But that too proved not effective to make a turnaround. As the team is going to suffer another trophy-less season, the Mumbai Indians fans are urging the management to bring back Rohit Sharma as their captain again to regain their glory days.
