Sad passing of key administrator and volunteer, Neta Sinclair

Tuesday 23rd June 2026

scottishathletics are saddened to report on the passing of Janet (Neta) Sinclair at the age of 93.

Neta was well-known across our sport over a number of decades in roles as an Official, administrator and team volunteer.

She was memorably General Team Manager for the Scotland team at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1986.

But that was just one of numerous roles over the years.

Positions of note that benefited from Neta’s support and wisdom would include:

*British Empire and Commonwealth Games athletics team manager 1966 Kingston Jamaica

*Commonwealth Games general team manager 1970 Edinburgh Scotland

*Administrative leadership role with Scottish women’s amateur athletic association (SWAAA) serving as secretary and vice president during an era when women’s athletics in Scotland was largely organised separately from the men’s governing structures.

*First woman nominated to the UK Sports Council by then Labour Sports Minister, Denis Howell.

Neta was also heavily involved in the organising and supporting of athletics events and teams behind the scenes. She was also regularly athletics Track Referee across athletics events in Scotland and embraced technology as it arrived and migrated to becoming a stalwart of photo finishing systems.

We send our sympathies to Neta’s family and friends and all at Edinburgh AC. When we are able to do so, we will share funeral details.
