The game didn’t start out well for Mets starter Kodai Senga. He had just returned from the injured list and then walked the first two batters he faced in the game. Senga then fell behind Sal Stewart 2-1 before throwing an 88 MPH sinker that Stewart unloaded on for a 410-foot, 3-run home run off of the facade of the upper deck in left-center to make it a 3-0 ballgame. Spencer Steer would come up with another run later in the inning when Senga went with his 4-seam fastball up in the zone and Steer took the 95 MPH pitch and put it into the seats in left-center to make it 4-0.
After two perfect innings for Brady Singer he ran into trouble in the top of the 3rd inning. He hit the leadoff batter and then gave up a 1-out single to put a runner in scoring position. Bo Bichette then came through with a 2-out RBI hit to make it 4-1. Juan Soto then worked a walk to load the bases, but a shallow fly out to short center stranded the runners.
Edwin Arroyo would lead off the bottom of the 5th with a double. He would come around to score on a single by Sal Stewart that pushed Cincinnati’s lead to four runs.
After five solid innings from Brady Singer the Reds turned things over to Sam Moll to begin the 6th. He would give up a 1-out single and then gave up a long 2-run home run to pinch hitter Mark Vientos that made it 5-3.
Brock Burke worked a scoreless 7th inning for the Reds. Tejay Antone then came out of the bullpen for the 8th inning and he got himself into trouble by walking the first two batters of the inning. He clamped down, though, and struck out the next two hitters before getting a groundout to strand both runners.
Still holding onto a 5-3 lead, Cincinnati sent Tony Santillan to the mound to try and seal the game. He would strike out Brett Baty to begin the inning. Juan Soto then hit a weak chopper down the 1st base line. Santillan fielded it and threw towards 1st, but the throw hit Soto in the back and he reached safely to bring the tying run to the plate. It wasn’t in the cards for New York as Santillan came through with a strikeout and a grountout to end the game.
Key Moment of the Game
Sal Stewart’s 3-run home run in the 1st inning. It helped set the tone for the night and the Reds never trailed.
