New Orlando Magic head coach Sean Sweeney understands that gaining the trust of players doesn’t come easy.
(via Orlando Magic):
“Trust is earned. Trust is being conscientious and consistent every day. The better I am at being consistent and being who I’m supposed to be, the more they can trust me, and then it’s reciprocated. If you be yourself, be the best version of yourself, it’s easier to trust. And so, I think just as a head coach or as a teammate or as someone that you’re in a relationship with, trust is earned. And you have to earn that trust by being who you’re supposed to be each and every day.
“At the end of the day, Reggie Jackson, who I coached in Detroit said, ‘You’re the first a**hole that I love.’ And if my players said that about me, I’d be happy about that. But no. I hope they say that there’s someone here who supports them, who’s someone here who got their back, who wants them to do well as individuals, but most importantly, who wants the team to do well. Because if we do well as a team, everyone else gets trickled down from that. Success comes from that.”
