Arne Slot is now urging Liverpool to sign Napoli defender Sam Beukema this summer in an attempt to finally work with a player who he’s admired for years.

Things are looking up for Slot. Defeat against Paris Saint-Germain and the manner in which it arrived threatened to end the Dutchman’s time at Anfield, but Liverpool have since earned some much-needed results.

A Luis Diaz repeat: Liverpool confident of signing Premier League “monster”

Liverpool are hoping to hijack one of their Premier League rivals’ top summer targets.

Whilst victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday wasn’t exactly routine, it did send the Reds back into the top four with three games left to play. And they’ve now also got the chance to jump into third on goal difference if they beat Manchester United at Old Trafford next weekend.

With fifth place enough to secure Champions League football, Liverpool certainly have their fate in their own hands. From Slot’s perspective, and perhaps the rest of those at Anfield for that matter, he’ll just want to get over the line and forget all about the current campaign.

His focus has already turned towards potential summer incomings, too. Attacking targets such as Eli Junior Kroupi have emerged in recent weeks, but so to have those that Slot wants to pursue elsewhere.

According to TeamTalk, Slot is now pushing Liverpool chiefs to sign Sam Beukema from Napoli this summer. The Dutchman has been an admirer of the defender since his Go Ahead Eagles days and could finally get his man many years later.

The Reds will, of course, need another centre-back in the event that Ibrahima Konate leaves as a free agent. Even if that seems unlikely at this stage, that concern still exists whilst the Frenchman is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal.

Beukema believes Slot is “one of the best”

It’s not been Konate’s best season, to say the least. The Liverpool defender has gone from Real Madrid’s radar to doubt over his Anfield future thanks to form alone. It’s raised serious questions that Beukema could yet provide an answer for by arriving in Merseyside this summer.

The Napoli man already has a fan in Slot and made it clear what he thinks of the Liverpool boss after squaring off against the Reds with Bologna last season.

“In my opinion, he’s one of the best coaches in the Netherlands and Europe. After our Champions League game against Liverpool, he praised me and the team, saying, ‘It’s incredible that we’re competing at this level’.”

Valued at £30m by Napoli, Beukema hasn’t quite made the impact he was hoping for at the home of the Italian champions – starting just 16 Serie A games so far this season.

Liverpool could sign a big-money striker in the summer.

If he wants a permanent starting place, then there’s a serious argument that the Dutchman needs Liverpool just as much as they’ll need him if Konate departs.

With admiration from Slot already clear, it’s a move that would work for all parties this summer.
