Tenshin Nasukawa vs. Juan Francisco Estrada fight recap

Tenshin Nasukawa (8-1, 3 KOs) returned to winning ways with a ninth round technical knockout of Juan Francisco Estrada (45-5, 28 KOs).

The official time of stoppage was 3:00. Nasukawa is now the mandatory challenger for the WBC bantamweight world title currently held by Takuma Inoue. The pair had clashed last year for that very title with Inoue emerging victorious via unanimous decision.

Nasukawa’s body shots were sending his opponent backwards as early as round one. Estrada arguably should have been ruled knocked down in that round after a left uppercut to the body sent him falling onto the ropes. A knockdown was not called, but it was clear that the Mexican was in for a rough night.

Both men picked up the tempo in round five, but it was Nasukawa who was landing the more damaging punches. There was a brief pause in the action in the sixth due to an accidental clash of heads. Estrada went down to the canvas as a result of it, but was able to carry on fighting. However, he was clearly taking a lot of damage and his resistance would not last much longer.

Nasukawa continue to rock his opponent as the fight progressed. Estrada was the smaller man and the size difference clearly had an impact. There appeared little that he could do to turn things around. Ultimately, his corner withdrew him from the contest following the conclusion of round nine, giving Nasukawa the victory via technical knockout.

Undercard results

Tomoya Tsuboi (3-0-1, 2 KOs) and Pedro Guevara (43-5-3, 22 KOs) fought to a technical draw. The official time of stoppage for this 10-round super flyweight contest was 0:23 of round two. An accidental clash of heads left Guevara unable to continue. As a result of this, the Japan Boxing Commission ruled this fight a technical draw.

José Calderón (15-3, 6 KOs) won a majority decision against Katsuma Akitsugi (14-1, 4 KOs) in a 10-round bantamweight bout. Although one judge had the action 95-95, the other two saw it 96-94 in favour of Calderón.

Keita Kubotera (3-0, 3 KOs) won via fifth round technical knockout against Crisaldy Beltran (5-2, 4 KOs). The official time of stoppage for this six-round super featherweight clash was 0:59. Kubotera was knocked down in the third from a left hook to the head. In round five, Beltran was dropped by a one-two upstairs. Although he got up, referee Biney Martin put an end to proceedings. Beltran’s left eye was sporting a fair amount of damage, something that may have caused Martin to end the fight instead of letting it go on.
