Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as frontrunners to sign Real Sociedad winger Takefusa Kubo this summer, with Spanish outlet Fichajes reporting the North London club are showing ‘strong’ interest in the 24-year-old Japanese international.
But here’s the elephant in the room — Spurs are currently in the relegation zone.
Kubo’s Rise From Reject to Real Contender
After failed stints at Barcelona and Real Madrid, Kubo found his footing at Sociedad, racking up 25 goals and 22 assists across 158 appearances. Add 48 senior Japan caps to that, and you’ve got a genuinely compelling profile — quick, technical, and comfortable in multiple attacking positions.
It’s exactly the kind of versatile, high-ceiling winger Tottenham’s rebuild desperately needs.
The £43m Question
Fichajes claim Spurs are preparing a bid between £34m and £43m — significant investment for a club potentially heading to the Championship.
Sunday’s defeat to Sunderland was damning. Sixteen losses in 32 league games. No Premier League win in four months. They sit 18th on 30 points, two behind West Ham after the Hammers’ emphatic 4-0 thrashing of Wolves.
It’s the first time Spurs have faced genuine relegation since 1977.
Would Kubo Even Come?
That’s the real question. A player of Kubo’s quality attracting interest across Europe won’t be short of suitors. If Tottenham drop down, this deal almost certainly collapses entirely.
Ange Postecoglou’s side must save their season first. Everything else is noise.
