Just about one year out from the World Cup, the U.S. women’s national team survived another seemingly ceaseless stamina-testing clash with Brazil to muster a 1-0 win on Tuesday night. Despite a different outcome, the match was equally as frenetic, intense and physical but undeniably more dramatic. The U.S. may have emerged victorious, but chaos reigned supreme.
Playing in front of more than 55,000 impassioned fans in Fortaleza, Brazil, for the first time in the second of two matches against the host nation of the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the American side was tested and tried time and again. In the 63 minutes of play it took the USWNT to find the back of the net and break the stalemate — and, finally, begin to break down Brazil’s defense — there were 20 fouls and five yellow cards.
