‘We’ll Have Those Conversations’ — Maple Leafs GM John Chayka Addresses Reports of Auston Matthews’ Hesitancy

After a decade of consistent postseason appearances, the Toronto Maple Leafs are heading into a difficult offseason following their failure to qualify for the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

A season disrupted by constant injuries has intensified scrutiny around the organization, especially after The Athletic’s Chris Johnston reported that Auston Matthews is in wait-and-watch mode to see what the front office can do this offseason.

With the franchise now at a major turning point, new general manager John Chayka has stepped into the spotlight to calm growing concerns surrounding his superstar’s long-term commitment.

John Chayka Breaks Silence on Auston Matthews Trade Speculation

Team captain Auston Matthews became the center of attention after his season-ending media availability, where he repeatedly said he “can’t predict the future” when discussing his long-term plans in Toronto.

These comments came after a difficult season in which Matthews dealt with a Grade 3 MCL tear and quad contusion that forced him to miss the final 16 games.

The 28-year-old captain remains under contract through the 2027-28 season on a 4-year, $53 million deal that carries a $13.25 million cap hit and includes a full no-movement clause. Still, reports linking him to teams such as Washington, San Jose, and Utah have continued to grow as Toronto begins another organizational transition.

Speaking on TSN OverDrive, Chayka addressed the speculation directly and pushed back against the idea that Matthews is already looking for a way out. “That’s not my understanding,” Chayka said. “I think Auston’s invested his entire NHL career into the Toronto Maple Leafs. That’s been an affirmative decision on his behalf.”

Chayka also emphasized the importance of communication as the new front office begins shaping its vision for the future. “As he evaluates what the next decade of his career looks like, it’s important that he feels a connectivity, an alignment, he has a similar vision and passion that we do. We’ll have those conversations and get together and share notes,” Chayka explained.

Chayka officially became the Maple Leafs’ 19th general manager on May 3, 2026, stepping into a difficult situation after Toronto finished last in the Atlantic Division and missed the postseason after years of early exits.

He will work alongside Leafs legend Mats Sundin, who joins as Senior Executive Advisor of Hockey Operations, hired by MLSE president Keith Pelley.

In the same interview, Chayka added that he wants to approach these discussions by listening first rather than forcing immediate conclusions.

“I wanna be a good listener. He’s the captain, it’s his room. He’s been through the ups and downs of this market,” he said, also noting that Sundin’s experience could help provide another important perspective.

Toronto’s front office now faces pressure to prove the team can quickly return to contention. Winning the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery and securing the No. 1 overall pick gives the organization a valuable asset, but the larger focus remains on whether the Leafs can convince Matthews that meaningful change is finally coming.
