The latest rugby news stories from Wales and beyond this evening

Here are the latest rugby headlines on the evening of Tuesday, April 21

Welsh derby abandoned

A Welsh rugby derby match was abandoned midway through the second half after an altercation broke out between the two teams, resulting in an injury to the referee.

Saturday’s meeting between Milford Haven and Haverfordwest in the Admiral National League 3 West was abandoned after 65 minutes, with Haverfordwest, the visitors to the Observatory Ground, leading 10-6 at the time.

According to reports, it came after tensions boiled over between the two teams, with the match referee calling the game off after suffering a leg injury in the midst of the scuffle.

The Welsh Rugby Union is aware of the incident and is set to investigate.

Haverfordwest currently sit top of the National League 3 West, one point clear of second-placed New Dock Stars.

Milford Haven, meanwhile, are in mid-table and five points above the relegation zone, with Saturday’s fixture an important one for both sides.

Scarlets will be ‘different team’ next season

Nigel Davies is confident the Scarlets will have a stronger squad next season, as he continues to build towards a long-term plan he believes will deliver improved results.

The former Wales coach was brought in as interim director of rugby in January and part of his remit has been to create a long-term plan for the club. That has been signed off by the Scarlets board and they have been working hard to recruit players.

The likes of Wales prop Corey Domachowski and Leinster hooker John McKee are set to join the Scarlets with more expected to follow.

Davies believes the Scarlets will be in a stronger position next season to compete in the United Rugby Championship.

“A big part of my remit is to come to look at a plan that moves us forward,” he said.

“That’s what I’ve done. We are well and truly down the path of instigating that programme.

“A lot of the things associated with that programme won’t come to fruition until pre-season.

“We will be in a far stronger position moving forward.

“It is not just about recruitment; it is about culturally setting the right tone, making sure that we support the players as best we can in their development and the coaches.

“It is quite comprehensive in terms of the programme we’ve put together.

“That’s what we are putting in place. So, we will be in a far better place moving forward. I’m confident that what we’ve got in place will absolutely make us a different team next year.”

Geordie Gwynn to join Edinburgh on three-year deal this summer

Former Scotland Under-20 winger Geordie Gwynn will join Edinburgh from Ealing Trailfinders on a three-year deal this summer.

The 22-year-old Brighton-born back has notched six tries in 14 appearances for the Champ Rugby side this season.

“I’m delighted to sign for Edinburgh,” said Gwynn, whose mother was born in the Scottish capital. “It’ll be really nice to see some familiar faces and I’m looking forward to getting to know the rest of the players and staff.

“Playing in front of such passionate fans in a competitive league is something that I’m really excited for.

“I believe Edinburgh is the perfect place for me to develop my game, continue improving and I can’t wait to get stuck in.”

News of Gwynn’s impending arrival follows the announcement on Sunday that Hurricanes centre Riley Higgins will move to the Hive Stadium.

Edinburgh head coach Sean Everitt said: “We’re delighted to welcome Geordie to Edinburgh this summer.

“He’s an explosive, dynamic back who has impressed everyone who has watched him come through the age-grade ranks and his performances with Scotland Under-20s showed he has the quality and temperament to compete at the highest level.

“Six tries in 14 games this season is a solid return for a young winger still developing his game and he’s shown plenty of promise throughout the campaign.

“He further bolsters what is already an exciting and competitive back line and at just 22, with the pathway he’s already been through, we genuinely believe he has everything he needs to kick on and fulfil his potential here.

“We can’t wait to get him involved.”
