The Philadelphia Eagles were in rumors all offseason about A.J. Brown, and they finally did it last week, sending him to the New England Patriots. Earlier in the offseason, it didn’t seem like Howie Roseman was interested in moving the wide receiver, but as time went on, he had a change of heart.
It then came to one point where his tone changed, according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.
“The first real conversation this year happened around the combine, and Wolf could sense a different tone from Roseman—the Eagles were willing do it, but preferred to go post-June 1, and they wanted a first-rounder and another high-end pick,” Breer wrote. “Philly’s model had been the Quinnen Williams return the Jets got from Dallas. The Packers/Raiders Davante Adams deal from 2022 was another comp that was floated.”
Roseman has never been afraid of making a trade, but he wanted to make sure that he was getting back something that he liked. In this case, it was draft picks that could help him build the team in the future, and he could probably use those picks for a bigger trade in the future.
Another big thing for Roseman in this trade was not caring what year the pick was in, according to Zach Berman of The Athletic.
“Roseman said his requirement for making the deal was a first-round pick,” Zach Berman wrote. “But he was less insistent on what year that pick would come. And the Eagles see value in the uncertainty of a future pick.”
It will be interesting to see if the Eagles plan on making any other moves throughout the offseason, and it wouldn’t be a surprise. Roseman always has his antennas up, and if it’s something that’s going to help the team now, he’s definitely going to do it.
