Lee Cattermole speaks for the first time as the new manager of Gateshead

Lee Cattermole speaks for the first time as the new manager of National League side Gateshead on a two year contract.

The 38 year old former Premier League and EFL player takes his first role in management, coming in as replacement for Rob Elliot, who left for Carlisle earlier this month.

Cattermole, who gained his UEFA A licence, has previously been a coach at the likes of Bristol Rovers, Burnley, Middlesbrough and with the Northern Irish FA.

“I am delighted that Lee will begin his managerial career at Gateshead,” said Interim Chairman, Graham Wood in a statement on their club website.

“On returning to the role of Chairman, it was clear that my immediate priority was to appoint a First-Team
Manager.

“Of the applicants already assembled, Lee was the standout candidate and I decided there was no need to look further.

“Following meetings with Lee and his agent, I am pleased to confirm that we have agreed terms and that Lee will commence his duties immediately.

“Lee brings with him the experience gained from over 250 games in the Premier League, where he worked with some of the most respected managers in world football, including Gareth Southgate and Martin O’Neill.”

Cattermole added: “It’s something I’m really excited about. The opportunity to get a crack at first-team management – especially at Gateshead as well. I think you’ve proven over the years that you’ve given that platform to first time managers.

“When you go into coaching or management, you’ve got to decide where you feel you’re going to be best suited, and I’ve been clear that I want to be a manager. It’s something I’ve made clear from the outset that I want to do, and it’s here now, and I’m excited for the challenge.

“My vision for the team is going to take time, it’s not going to be quick. I’ll have clear expectations with the group in terms of the demands of being a professional footballer and how to move forward in the game.

“How I’ll carry myself as a manager here will be consistent and the players will see that, they’ll feel that and I’m sure they’ll learn from that.

“We’ve talked a lot about the identity of Gateshead over the years and I want to learn about that and understand what we really want to keep hold of and what’s the core of it, and then where I feel we can add myself to that and hopefully develop it further.

“I’m not coming in and saying it’s all this way or that way – let’s build something together.”

Here’s how fans reacted after Lee Cattermole speaks for the first time as the new manager of Gateshead…

@LRbix: Interesting that is get behind him at all costs everyone. Looking forward to Levi Amantchis redemption arc under Cattermole

@nathancoulson98: Don’t think they could do any better at all, I’m quite happy with that. 🎶 Lee Cattermole’s black and white army 🎶

@HeedQuarters: Get behind this man

@GFCJosh0503: Fingers crossed it goes well

@Oldmansknees: @GatesheadFC Good luck to Lee Cattermole. Great choice.

@danno_4200: Good luck Lee.. get the Heed promoted

@ellishall_12: Will be very Pools for him to do great #HUFC

@dannyhufc: Lee Cattermole after being reportedly one of the targets that @Official_HUFC were pushing for earlier this summer now has found himself a job in Tyneside, taking over from Rob Elliott at @GatesheadFC . With him signing a deal through until 2028. Certainly one to keep an eye on over the course of the season #HUFC

@trevk37: Interesting choice, but a decent capture. Can they sort themselves off the pitch and build on the momentum of last seasons end?

Andy Mason: Welcome onboard here’s hoping you can get as much out the group as your predecessor. It’s very sad seeing some of the comments on here the newcastle Sunderland rivalry has absolutely nothing to do with our club

Gary Dolman: Well, I was born in Gateshead, in the millionaires’ playground that is Low Fell but, like most people, I was raised a Toon fan. I switched to The Heed with Ashley and especially the PIF. I feel at home now, even with everything gannin on, but this is still a big deal to say to an ex-Mackem Howay the Lad! There, I said it.

Lewis Kirton: Thought the rumours were true. If he doesn’t change anything and maybe add a bit more aggression in the middle of the park then I have a good feeling about this season
