Bangladesh government launches investigation into shocking T20 World Cup 2026 withdrawal

The Government of Bangladesh has formed a special committee to investigate why the national cricket team of Bangladesh declined to participate in the 2026 T20 World Cup. The Bangladesh cricket team was about to play in the tournament.

Still, later, after a series of dramas, the International Cricket Council (ICC) replaced the Tiger Brigade with the Scotland cricket team. Weeks after the conclusion of the tournament, the Government has formed a committee to find out the actual reason why the cricket board allowed the cricket team to play in the elite tournament.

Bangladesh T20 World Cup withdrawal

As per media reports, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Youth and Sports has formed a three-member inquiry committee to investigate the matter.

It is important to note that when the BCB went against India and the International Cricket Council, ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, there was a Muhammad Yunus-led caretaker government. Following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was appointed as the Chief Adviser of the interim government (caretaker government) in Bangladesh.

Later, after the general election, Tarique Rahman was elected as the Prime Minister. Under the Tarique Rahman-led government, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has decided to look into the matter of why the BCB did not allow the cricket team to take part in the tournament.

BCB denied travel to India

For the group stage, their cricket team was scheduled to play in India. But, due to rising tension, BCB asked the International Cricket Council to shift their venues outside India. Sri Lanka was the joint host nation of the tournament, so BCB demanded that all of their matches be shifted from India to Sri Lanka. The board’s concern was for their players’ safety and security.

The controversy sparked after the release of Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League 2026. Because of severe backlashes, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) asked the Kolkata Knight Riders to release the player, and the franchise did that as per BCCI’s directives.

“I have already spoken about these issues – why we could not participate in World Cup cricket and where exactly our shortcomings in sports diplomacy lie. These are matters we must thoroughly examine.” Bangladesh state minister for youth and sports Aminul Haque said this earlier.

“In my view, we need to further strengthen our sports diplomacy because sports are a platform where, beyond all divisions and political ideologies, we can unite as a nation. So, we must ensure that such mistakes are not repeated in the future and that through sports diplomacy, we maintain friendly relations and preserve a healthy sporting environment,” he added further.

A three-member committee has been formed

As a part of the further procedure, the government has formed a three-member committee for investigation.

“According to an official government order dated May 10, 2026, former Additional Secretary Dr. A.K.M. Oli Ullah will convene the three-member committee that includes former captain and current chief selector Habibul Bashar Sumon and Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Faisal Dastagir as members. The government asked the panel to submit its report within 15 working days,” Cricbuzz reported.
