Mirra Andreeva defeated Maja Chwalinska 6-3, 6-2 to win the French Open.
Lifting the Suzanne-Lenglen Cup, she did what her coach, Conchita Martinez, could not.
The Spaniard never won a French Open title, despite playing three finals (one singles, two doubles).
How many Grand Slams does Mirra Andreeva win in her career? 🏆
There was no jealousy from Martinez, though, as she was delighted to see Andreeva win her maiden Grand Slam title.
Conchita Martinez says the ‘sky is the limit’ for Mirra Andreeva after first Grand Slam win
Appearing as a guest on ‘The Final by Hesperide‘, Martinez was asked to describe the emotions she felt when Andreeva converted match point.
“It’s very difficult to describe, you have to be there,” she said.
“I had goosebumps, she was such a champion, she played so good.
“Throughout the whole tournament, her composure was always there, always fighting for everything. So I felt really proud; I’m super excited and happy also for what’s coming in the future.”

Just months after Andreeva claimed she was not a champion, in another on-court outburst, she lifted the biggest trophy of her career on Court Philippe Chatrier.
Martinez is proud of the way Andreeva controlled her emotions in Paris, as she made a statement that should worry some of the 19-year-old’s biggest rivals.
“I think you have to have the fire, but in a positive way,” she said.

“She’s learning; she’s young.
“She has to thank herself for being open, for fighting through those emotions, through those demons; there were plenty of those through the Championships, but lately she was amazing.
“I step in when I feel like I need to; if not, I let her figure out things.
“It’s my first time developing a player from a young age; she’s got a lot still to learn, a lot to work on, and a lot to improve. She’s open; the sky’s the limit, so let’s go for more.”
Martinez believes there are still improvements to come from the Russian youngster.
Considering she’s already won three titles this year and sits first in the ‘Live WTA Race’, that’s bad news for the likes of Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, and Iga Swiatek!

Martinez was also asked how the moment compared to when she won her Grand Slam title, at Wimbledon in 1994.
“I guess pretty close, actually, you live every moment, every forehand she plays… You play every backhand yourself while she’s hitting,” she said.
“I live with passion for this sport, and I’m so happy.
“But all credit to her, she’s a quick learner and student, and she wants to get better, and this is why it’s a pleasure to work with her.”
With Martinez by her side, there’s no reason why Andreeva can’t add to her Grand Slam tally over the coming months.
Daniela Hantuchova makes bold claim about Conchita Martinez’s coaching ability
During BBC Radio 5 Live’s French Open coverage, former world number five Daniele Hantuchova shared her thoughts on Martinez and Andreeva.
“What a moment in Mirra’s career. We could tell that this moment was coming,” she said.

“It’s so beautiful to see how much Conchita has given back to our sport and to see this beautiful relationship.
“I’ve been saying this for many, many years now. I feel Conchita is one of the best, if not the best, female coaches, and coaches in general we have on the tour.
“We must not also forget to mention her fitness coach, who has been around for a long time.
“This was so important for Mirra to get the first one done; it is going to affect the rest of her career, big time.”
Looking to double her Grand Slam tally, Andreeva will soon set her sights on Wimbledon.
The 2026 Wimbledon Championships begin on Monday, June 29.
