Iconic Cargo Bike Brand Riese & Müller Exiting U.S. Market but not Canada

German e-bike and cargo bike manufacturer Riese & Müller is shutting down operations in the United States later this year.

In a statement released April 20, the company confirmed it will withdraw from the U.S. market effective July 31, following what it described as an “extensive strategic and economic assessment.” The decision comes amid what the company called “persistently challenging and increasingly volatile market conditions” in the United States.

And, yes, we all know what that means.

The brand is best-known as purveyors of some fantastic e-cargo bikes such as the Packster and the Load.

Instead, Riese & Müller plans to double down on its European base, where it sees stronger long-term growth potential. The company said it will concentrate resources on expanding its sales and dealer network across core European markets, with a focus on deepening partnerships and strengthening its overall market position.

“Given the current circumstances, it is more important than ever for us to focus our efforts on our core markets and strategically bundle our capacities,” said CEO Dr. Sandra Wolf.

The move shows a changing landscape for e-bikes, where demand, infrastructure, and regulatory support are vastly different by region. While Europe has continued to see strong uptake—particularly in urban mobility and cargo bike adoption—the U.S. market has proven more complex, with fluctuating demand, supply chain challenges, and policy uncertainty.

The company explained that the withdrawal is limited to the U.S. market. Other international regions, including Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, will continue to be served.

For existing U.S. customers and dealers, Riese & Müller says the transition will be managed with continuity in mind. Orders can still be placed by dealers until the July 31 deadline, after which no new product orders will be accepted. Remaining inventory will continue to be sold while supplies last.

The company also committed to ongoing after-sales support. Spare parts, technical documentation, and service resources will remain available through dealer partners, and all existing warranty obligations will be honored.

“We extend our sincere thanks to our U.S. dealer partners for their outstanding commitment, passion, and many years of trusted collaboration,” said Chief Sales Officer Timo Gührer. “Our heartfelt thanks also go to our U.S. customers for their long-standing loyalty.”
