James Sands returns, signs extension with NYCFC

James Sands’ time with German club St. Pauli may be over, but his future looks bright with parent club New York City FC.

Sands returned from his loan in Germany and signed a contract extension with NYCFC, the MLS side announced Thursday. Sands’ contract extension will run through the 2029-30 MLS season and includes an option for 2030-31.

“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome James back to New York City,” said NYCFC Sporting Director Todd Dunivant. “James has been an important part of this Club’s history, has proven himself in this League, and now brings top European experience. As we continue to build our core roster, James will be a vital member of our group moving forward.”

Sands originally joined St. Pauli during the 2024-25 season and remained there for the most recent campaign. The 25-year-old made 35 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring one goal and registering one assist.

He last featured for St. Pauli on March 8 before suffering a season-ending ankle injury. St. Pauli suffered Bundesliga relegation after finishing last in the 18-club league.

“I’m really excited to be back with the Club,” said Sands. “New York City FC has been an important part of my career at every stage. Whether that was developing as a young player in the Academy, becoming a Homegrown, establishing myself in the First Team, and even giving me these opportunities to develop in Europe, New York City has been with me every step of the way. Now it’s my turn to give the best years of my career back to the Club. From day one, I’ve had a great connection with the fans, and I’m looking forward to keeping that going.”

Sands originally was NYCFC’s first homegrown signing back in 2017 and has since made 143 appearances, scored one goal and adding five assists in all competitions for the Eastern Conference club. He helped the club win MLS Cup in 2021 and the Campeones Cup in 2022, the lone two trophies in NYCFC history.
