Linda McMahon just got dragged into a major political fight, and this one has nothing to do with WWE drama.
The former WWE executive, who now serves as U.S. Secretary of Education, is facing articles of impeachment after Rep. Suzanne Bonamici of Oregon filed a resolution against her on Wednesday, June 25. The resolution accuses McMahon of “high crimes and misdemeanors” tied to how she has handled the Department of Education.
According to Congress.gov, the resolution is listed as H.Res.1391, “Impeaching Linda M. McMahon, Secretary of Education, for high crimes and misdemeanors.” It has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee.
Bonamici is accusing McMahon of breaking federal law by moving Department of Education offices and programs into other federal agencies without getting approval from Congress first. The resolution also claims McMahon made false statements to Congress and breached the public trust. Bonamici made it clear she believes McMahon is trying to gut the Department of Education without having the legal power to do it.
“Secretary McMahon has betrayed students, families, and educators by dismantling and demolishing the Department of Education, something she does not have authority to do.”
Bonamici also said Congress created the department, so McMahon cannot simply start tearing it apart on her own.
“Congress created the Department and it would take an Act of Congress to shut it down. About 90 percent of students in this country attend public schools. Students have the right to equal access without discrimination and students with disabilities have the right to a free and appropriate education.”
She then went even harder, saying she will not sit back while McMahon goes after programs, funding, and research tied to public education.
“I will not stand by and let Sec. McMahon destroy the federal programs, funding, and research that are critical to public schools and the millions of students they serve.”
A press release announcing the resolution claimed McMahon unlawfully ordered the transfer of at least five offices and their programs to other agencies without Congress signing off on it.
“Since taking office McMahon has unlawfully ordered the transfer of at least five offices and their programs to other agencies – all without the consent of Congress.”
Bonamici’s office said those moves basically rip the guts out of the Department of Education and block it from doing the work Congress already assigned to it.
“These transfers essentially gut the Department of Education and obstruct the Department’s ability to conduct statutory oversight and disburse federal funds appropriated by Congress through its authority under Article I of the United States Constitution.”
McMahon already fired back after Bonamici said she planned to file the articles of impeachment. The former WWE executive responded on X and accused Democrats of attacking her for trying to change the education system.
“To the Democrats in Congress: do better.”
She also pushed back on the impeachment effort by saying Democrats were treating her work to improve education outcomes and reduce federal bureaucracy like some kind of crime.
“It speaks volumes that House Democrats think an impeachable offense is working to improve student outcomes and reduce the federal bureaucracy.”
McMahon then unloaded on Democrats over what she sees as failures in the education system.
“They must not be bothered by chronic failures of our education system that result in historic low test scores, a failed FAFSA form rollout, classrooms shuttered during COVID, designating parents as terrorists, and males in female locker rooms.”
This is a wild spot for McMahon, who went from helping run WWE to running one of the most debated departments in the federal government. Now, Democrats are trying to put her job on the line with articles of impeachment.
The resolution still has to go through Congress, so this is not an automatic removal from office. Still, it puts McMahon in the middle of a nasty Capitol Hill fight, with Bonamici accusing her of overstepping her authority and McMahon firing right back like she has no plans to back down.
Linda McMahon has been around enough chaos to know how to take a punch, but this is a different kind of fight. WWE fans know her from the boardroom, politics fans know her from Washington, and now both worlds are watching to see whether this impeachment push goes anywhere or dies in committee.
