Speculation continues to build around a possible match between Nick Aldis and GUNTHER at WWE SummerSlam 2026 following their physical confrontation at Night of Champions.
The situation escalated backstage when Aldis and GUNTHER were involved in an altercation that led to storyline consequences for both men. WWE placed the SmackDown General Manager on administrative leave, while GUNTHER was sent home. These developments have added momentum to talk of a potential in-ring showdown between the two.
Nick Aldis vs GUNTHER SummerSlam Speculation
During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer addressed the growing rumors and suggested that a match between Aldis and GUNTHER could be in the plans.
“I think they’re going to wrestle at SummerSlam, yeah,” Meltzer said. “Nick’s younger than [Raw GM] Adam Pearce. I never heard a lot of interest in Adam Pearce wrestling, even though Adam Pearce is a character and everything. I think he’s great, but I never sensed that. Aldis, I guess because he’s big, got the big shoulders and all that in the suit, there’s always been that thing like, ‘Oh, he should wrestle.’ I’d say there’s more interest in him wrestling.”
Aldis joined WWE television as the SmackDown General Manager in October 2023 and has largely remained in a non-wrestling role since then. A former NWA World Heavyweight Champion, he previously indicated that an in-ring return in WWE was unlikely. However, recent events have shifted that outlook, with speculation increasing about a possible debut match under the WWE banner.
Although Aldis has mainly worked as an authority figure, he has been involved in physical moments on WWE programming. At Night of Champions, he shoved GUNTHER during their confrontation. He has also taken RKOs from Randy Orton in past segments, showing occasional physical involvement despite not competing in matches.
Aldis, now 39, last competed shortly before joining WWE, wrestling at an Appalachian Championship Wrestling event. His experience and recent storyline developments have fueled discussion about whether he could step back into the ring for a high-profile match.
WWE SummerSlam 2026 is scheduled to take place on August 1 and 2 in Minnesota, with several major matches already confirmed. Roman Reigns is set to defend the World Heavyweight Championship against Seth Rollins, continuing their long-standing rivalry. Brock Lesnar will face Oba Femi inside Hell in a Cell, with Paul Heyman aligned with Lesnar. In the women’s division, Iyo Sky is set to challenge Liv Morgan for the Women’s World Championship.
While no official match between Aldis and GUNTHER has been announced, the storyline direction and recent reports have kept the possibility in focus heading into one of WWE’s biggest events of the year.
